Glossary

Audio Channels: separate video channels offering crystal-clear, 100 percent digital audio music encompassing each different musical preference and genre

Bandwidth: measures the amount of information that can flow between two points in a certain period of time, the broader the bandwidth, the faster the information can flow.

Caller ID: Qwest product used to identify callers by name and telephone number (service integrated with Qwest Choice™ TV for subscribers with Qwest Caller ID™)

Choice OnLine: the first package of Choice OnLine with Internet access at up to 256 Kbps

Choice OnLine Deluxe:: the second package of Choice OnLine with Internet access at up to 1.5 Mbps, and serves multiple computers

Choice TV: advanced digital television service offered by Qwest

Configuration: the set-up and internal processing of computer hardware and software

Dedicated Connection: one, single always-on line connected to a computer that allows constant Internet availability at all times

Deluxe Premium Plus: the second package of Choice TV offering 29 premium movie channels

Digital Gateway Box: the digital box that connects televisions, personal computers, stereo equipment, VCRs and telephones throughout the customer's home using one central location and hookup in VDSL markets

Digital Network: description of data which is stored or transmitted as a sequence of discrete symbols using electronic or electromagnetic signals (opposite is analog)

Download: transfer data or code from a larger "host' system over a digital communication link to a smaller 'client' system

E-mail: messages, usually text, sent from one person to another via computer, can also be sent automatically to a large number of addresses (Mailing List)

Ethernet: very common method of networking computers in a LAN using a component known as a card; ethernet will handle about 10,000,000 bits-per-second and can be used with almost any kind of computer

Full Choice®: the most popular Qwest Choice TV package offering basic theme channels, plus access to Pay-Per-View and music channels.

Homepage: web page relating to an individual, institution or subject area with a URL consisting of a hostname, e.g. www.qwest.com/vdsl

Icon: a graphic symbol (usually a simple picture) that denotes a program, command, data file or concept in a graphical user interface

Integrated Services: capability of providing multiple services using the same platform (used with the Qwest Choice™ TV & OnLine services-Caller ID and Voice Messaging)

Interactive Programming Guide: the new channel guide that allows users to select specific channels, times or themes in viewing or recording

Internet: worldwide network of computer networks that use the TCP/IP network protocols to facilitate data transmission and exchange information

Kbps: standard measure of data rate and transmission capacity equaling 1000 bytes per second

Licensing Authorities: the different counties petitioned by Qwest in order to gain franchise rights to provide cable in that area

Mbps: unit of measurement for data storage equaling 1,048,576 bytes per second

Netiquette: etiquette on the Internet

One-Stop Shop: the convenient and fast Qwest customer bill including Internet service, telephone service, portable phone and other services consolidated onto one monthly bill

Parental Control: the option giving parents the ability to monitor and block specific channels and shows from children viewing

Pay-Per-View: immediate, one-touch ordering available with Choice TV & OnLine remote used to order movies on a view now, pay later system

Premium Plus: selected entertainment channel package for Choice TV subscribers offering choices of different premium movie channels

Search Engine: website used to search different directories of the Internet for specific requested information

Subscriber Website: specific website created by Qwest for its Choice TV & OnLine subscribers

Surfing: [from the 'surf' idiom for rapidly flipping TV channels] to search the Internet using a WWW browser

Theme Packages: different television channel clusters, grouped by genre, such as family, sports, news, etc that can be ordered together or a la carte

URL: the World Wide Web uses Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) to specify the location of files on other servers

VDSL (Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line): the technology used by Qwest to deliver high-speed Internet connections and crystal-clear television programming, known as Qwest Choice™ TV & OnLine

Voice Messaging: Qwest product used to record telephone messages (service integrated with Qwest Choice™ TV for subscribers of Qwest Voice Messaging™)
