SIOUX EMPIRE CHARACTER COUNTS PROGRAM KICKS OFF 2008 ASSEMBLY SEASON

Local Athletes to Present Pillars of Character at Sioux Falls Schools

SIOUX FALLS, S.D., FEB. 11, 2008—Each year, the Sioux Empire Character Counts program invites local high school athletes to visit Sioux Falls-area schools to present the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are then encouraged to practice the pillars at school and in their extracurricular activities.

A $5,000 grant from the CenturyLink Foundation will fund the Sioux Empire Character Counts assemblies during 2008.

On Monday, Feb. 11, students at Longfellow Elementary were the first to hear from two student-athletes who talked about sportsmanship and why kids should stay positive, no matter the situation.

Sioux Empire Character Counts student athletes serve as role models and mentors for elementary, middle- and high-school students. The student athletes promote sportsmanship and its importance in schools and communities during a series of assemblies at Sioux Falls-area schools. Thousands of students hear the Character Counts message each year, and are challenged to practice the pillars on and off the playing field.
