FAQ
Q. What managed security services are available today from Qwest®?
A. Qwest offers Managed Firewall (MFW) VPN as part of its Managed Security Services suite of products. The MFW-VPN solution utilizes an industry-leading firewall platform from Check Point™ operating on hardware developed by Nokia® The service may include hardware, software and maintenance with monitoring, management and administration provided by Qwest 24/7.
Q. Where can MFW-VPN solutions be deployed?
A. Firewalls can be used for much more than simply securing Internet access.
They can also be used effectively to help:
- Control Internet access and provide detailed management reporting
- Create secondary Internet firewalls configured for high availability or
load balancing
- Install firewall-based VPN solutions between all Internet-connected company
sites
- Enable extranet connections to other supplier/business ally networks
- Enable frame relay to IP gateway connections
- Enable firewalls in front of hosted servers in a CyberCenter™ facilities
from Qwest
- Enable a firewall between hosted servers and back-end databases
Q. Do MFW-VPN solutions require Qwest connectivity?
A. No. MFW-VPN solutions can be used in conjunction with any ISP service.
However, attractive pricing, bundling and service level agreement (SLA) options
are available to customers procuring all of their network services from Qwest,
where they are available.
Q. Why would I consider outsourcing my firewall management?
A. IT departments are frequently mandated to provide firewalls at access
points and within hosting environments. Outsourcing firewall management can
assist them in:
- Lowering costs if compared to implementing similar solutions in-house
- Eliminating the internal failure points and uncertainty that can occur when
a limited number of internal security administrators become unavailable
- Consistently enforcing security policies and reporting requirements at all
access points
- Increasing security by having Qwest experts manage their security defenses
24/7
Q. What support infrastructure does Qwest use and why is it a preferred option?
A. Qwest runs a modified version of the Check Point Provider-1™ from Checkpoint Technologies, Inc. support system. Instead of logging onto each system individually, changes are made to one of several master configuration servers located in Qwest CyberCenter™ facilities. Changes are then "pushed" to the system over the network. If you have multiple sites, Qwest develops a template configuration with local modifications. When you need to make a change to all of your systems, Qwest needs only to update the master configuration server and, with a single mouse-click, sends those changes automatically to all of your company’s MFW-VPN devices. Since the configuration servers can be configured in clusters, Qwest is able to offer one of the most scalable support models in the industry.
