Q. What is Qwest Primary Rate ISDN Service?

A. The basic Qwest Primary Rate ISDN Service structure consists of 23B channels and 1D channel, for a total transmission rate of 1.544 Mbps. This is equivalent to a T-1 facility. Each 64 Kbps B channel carries user information such as voice calls, circuit-switched data or video. The D channel is a 64 Kbps channel that is used to carry the control or signaling information.

Q. What is 23B + D?

A. This is the Qwest Primary Rate ISDN Service configuration that provides 23B channels and 1D channel. The B channels carry user information such as voice calls, circuit-switched data or video, while the D channel handles signaling information. When equipped, the D channel controls a maximum of 479B channels. The B channel may be provisioned on the same facility as the D channel or on another primary rate service T-1 facility.

Q. What is the function of the D Channel?

A. The D, delta, channel carries signaling at 64 Kbps from your CPE to the service office. The D channel does not have voice capability.

Q. What is the function of the B channel?

A. The B, bearer, channel carries circuit switched voice and/or data communications at speeds up to 64 Kbps, from your premises over the loop facility to the service office.

Q. What setup charges are incurred on a Qwest Primary Rate ISDN Service three year or five year contract?

A. Qwest Primary Rate ISDN Service has three billable rate elements: 1) the T-1 facility also known as DS1 2) the service configuration and 3) the trunks and trunk terminations. When all three-rate elements are placed under one contract, the DS1, the service configuration and the trunks and trunk terminations all setup charges are waived on a five-year contract. On a three-year contract the installation for the DS1, service configuration, trunks and trunk terminations is 50 percent off the standard setup charges. Additional charges for direct inward dial (DID), as well as other miscellaneous charges are applicable.
