    Why isn't there a phone port on the back of my modem?

    Unlike the Actiontec® modems, the Qwest® Advanced Networking Modem: 2-Wire® 2701 HG is not provided with a built-in filtered phone port. To compensate for this, we have provided a "giveback" filter in the modem fulfillment package, which supports local phones.

    How do I set up a wired (Ethernet) network with my modem?

    You will need an additional RJ-45 Ethernet straight-through cable. Setting up additional wired computers is as easy as plugging in the cable from the four-port switch on the back of the Qwest Advanced Networking Modem: 2-Wire 2701 HG to your computer. Visit your local electronics store to purchase an additional Ethernet cable.

    Which protocols does the Qwest Advanced Networking Modem: 2-Wire 2701 HG support?

    The internal LAN connections support multiple protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, NetBEUI, IPX/SPX, and AppleTalk). The External WAN connection supports only TCP/IP.

    • The yellow Ethernet connections are auto-detecting and support 10Mbps (Megabits per second) or 100Mbps connections.
    • The WAN connection supports up to 24Mbps downstream and up to 1.2Mbps upstream. Today, Qwest supports up to 8Mbps only.
    • The 802.11b wireless connection supports up to 11Mbps connection speeds.
    • The 802.11g wireless connection supports up to 54Mbps connection speeds.
    • Wireless speeds vary depending on signal quality, environmental factors and physical distance.

    How do I update my modem's firmware?

    • There are currently no firmware updates available for this modem.
    • The firmware available from the 2Wire® Web site is not compatible with Qwest® Broadband service.
    • Once available, we strongly recommend you use the Qwest-provided firmware to upgrade your modem.
    • If you update your modem with non-compatible firmware, your Qwest broadband service may not work.

    How do I activate the wireless and WEP features on my modem?

    Wireless is on automatically with the Qwest Advanced Networking Modem: 2-Wire® 2701 HG. The modem is preconfigured with a default 64 BIT (ten digit) WEP key. The default WEP key can be found on the sticker located on the bottom of the modem.

    You will experience the best modem wireless signal strength and quality if you place your modem in an elevated position, located centrally to the area of service. Place the modem in a location with the fewest physical obstructions to the service area, to reduce possible environmental effects. Place the modem away from microwaves and cordless phones if possible.

    Do floors, walls and glass affect my wireless signal?

    The physical environment can have varying effects on modem wireless signal strength and quality. The more dense the object (e.g., a concrete wall compared to a plaster wall), the greater the interference. Concrete or metal reinforced structures cause a higher degree of signal loss than wood, plaster or glass construction.

    Is the Apple® Airport wireless device compatible with the modem?

    Yes, the Apple Airport complies with the 802.11b and 802.11g standards. If using the WEP security feature, refer to your Apple Airport documentation for special instructions on how to enter the WEP key so it will be compatible.

    A static IP address is a unique numeric address that identifies your computer on the Internet. Qwest, as your Internet Service Provider (ISP), can assign a static IP address to be a permanent address for your computer. Learn more.

    You'll need to reconfigure your network settings (e.g., workgroup, domain, password, user name, IP address). You may also use third-party software such as NetSwitcher to switch automatically between different configurations.

    The valid IP range is 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254. We recommend using the default settings, but IP ranges and LAN subnets can be changed if necessary.

    1. Select Start, Run, and type “winipcfg”. Press Enter.
    2. When the “winipcfg” screen displays, ensure your network device is selected.

    Windows NT, 2000 and XP:

    1. Select Start, Run and type “cmd”. Press Enter.
    2. When the “Command” screen displays, type “ipconfig” and press Enter.

    You can also use the 2Wire® Web interface to get your IP address:

    • Type “192.168.0.1” in the Address bar of your Internet browser.
    • Select Status, then select the Active User List on the left.
