A gateway is a router capable device which provides an ADSL connection and multiple user connections without requiring the addition of a hub or switch. For example the Actiontec 1524 has a built in 4 port switch and also provides a wireless expansion interface. Your Actiontec 1524 gateway is pre-configured as a router.
