Instructions for MAC® 8.01 to 9.2.2

Please print these instructions before beginning so you can easily refer to them while going through the Actiontec 1520 External Modem recovery processes. If you do not have a printer, you may save these instructions and open them on your desktop so that you can follow along as you complete the installation processes.
NOTE: If running OS 9.2.2 or lower, you must install the latest version of Macintosh® Runtime for Java (MRJ) from the Apple Developer Connection at http://developer.apple.com/java/download.html. If running OS X, there is no need to install anything; OS X features a native Java runtime environment.
Recovering your Actiontec 1520 External Modem to the latest software release involves the following five processes:
- Downloading the Actiontec 1520 external modem recovery file "rec9-1.60.10.0.71-r1520su.sit" to your hard drive
- Set your TCP/IP setting to Manual (static)
- Recovering the Actiontec 1520 to software release 1.60.10.0.71
- Setting the TCP/IP settings to Using DHCP Server (dynamic)
- Reconfiguring your Actiontec 1520
WARNING!!!! Once the download process is started it is crucial the download process is not interrupted at any time. In fact, you could render your Actiontec 1520 useless if the download process is interrupted. Qwest assumes no liability if the download process is not successful.
******While performing the Actiontec recovery below, all modem configuration information will be lost. Please ensure you record all configuration information before continuing with the recovery process. You will need to reconfigure your modem once the recovery is complete. For further configuration support please call the Qwest DSL support center at 1-800-247-7285******
Process 1 - Downloading the Actiontec 1520 software file to your hard drive.
STEP 1
Click here to download the "rec9-1.60.10.0.71-r1520su.sit" Qwest approved software release for the Actiontec 1520. Please save this file on your desktop.
STEP 2
Double click on the "rec9-1.60.10.0.71-r1520su.sit" file you saved in the previous step in on your desktop. The file will un-stuff and a program folder will be placed on your desktop.

Process 2 Setting your TCP/IP Stack for Manual (Static)
In order to complete the recovery of the Actiontec 1520 to firmware version 1.60.10.0.71, you will need to set your TCP/IP stack for static IP addressing using the following values.
IP Address: 192.168.0.99
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router Address: 192.168.0.1
STEP 1
Select Apple, Control Panels, TCP/IP.
STEP 2
Click on configure as shown below and select MANUALLY.

STEP 3
Please type the following values in the associated fields as shown below. Then, close the window and save your changes by clicking on the box outlined in red below.
IP Address = 192.168.0.99
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
Router Address = 192.168.0.1
NOTE: If you have changed the LAN IP Address of your Actiontec gateway, please use the new LAN IP address for the router address.

STEP 4
Click on SAVE.

Process 3 - Upgrading the Actiontec 1520 to software release 1.60.10.0.71
Ensure your modem is connected to the PC you will be using to recover the Actiontec 1520 to firmware version 1.60.10.0.71. The Power light and one of the four Ethernet lights should be illuminated. A hard wired Ethernet MAC must be used to recover the Actiontec 1520. A wireless connection cannot be used to recover the Actiontec 1520.
Before continuing with the upgrade process please close all applications you may have running on your PC. Please leave the Windows Explorer window open.
If you have a FTP or TFTP server running on the PC being used to upgrade the Actiontec 1520 they must also be closed before continuing with the upgrade process.
WARNING!!!!! All configuration information will be lost during the recovery process. Ensure you have noted all configuration information before continuing with the recovery process.
STEP 1
Double click on the rec9-1.60.10.0.71-r1520su folder that was placed on your desktop during the un-stuff process.

STEP 2
Click on the recovery icon highlighted below to start the recovery process to firmware version 1.60.10.0.71.

STEP 3
Select START.

STEP 4
Once you select start, the following outlined in red will appear indicating the recovery process is ready to begin.
To begin the recovery process, unplug the power from the back of the Actiontec 1520.
Once you have unplugged the Actiontec gateway hold down the reset button located on the back of the gateway.
While continuing to hold down the reset button plug the power cord back into the Actiontec gateway. Once the recovery process starts you can release the reset button.
NOTE: Do not interrupt the recovery process once it has begun. If the recovery process is interrupted you will have to start the process again from the beginning.

STEP 5
Once the progress bar indicates 100% completion as shown below, the recovery process is complete. Select EXIT.

STEP 6
Once the upgrade program has closed, unplug the power cable from the back of the Actiontec 1520 to perform a power cycle on the modem. Wait 30 seconds and plug it back in.
The Actiontec 1520 will automatically train, but will need to be reconfigured (according to Process 5 below) before you can explore the web.
Process 4 - Setting your TCP/IP Stack for Dynamic Addressing
Before beginning the reconfiguration process you must first set your MAC to dynamic addressing.
Please perform the following steps to reset your MAC to dynamic addressing.
STEP 1
Select Apple, Control Panels, TCP/IP.

STEP 2
Click on configure as shown below and select USING DHCP SERVER.

STEP 3
Close the window and save your changes by clicking on the box outlined in red below.

STEP 4
Click on SAVE.

Process 5 - Reconfiguring the Actiontec 1520
Please reconfigure the Actiontec 1520 according to the configuration information you recorded before the recovery process. For additional information please refer to your ISP worksheet.
