Talking Books
"Since June 6, 1960, the Telephone Pioneers of America have played a unique and significant community service role through the talking book machine-repair program. Over the years, Pioneers have repaired more than 1.6 million Library of Congress machines and dedicated countless hours in workshops around the country. Without the tireless efforts of thousands of Pioneers, the Library of Congress could not continue to provide working talkingbook machines. This remarkable accomplishment in 'answering the call' helps open the world of reading for blind and physically handicapped individuals." Frank Kurt Cycle, Director, National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
Qwest Pioneers are involved in this important project across our region. Last year, volunteers, working an average of 1/2 day per week, repaired over 23,000 talking book machines in the 14 states!
