For students at eight elementary schools in a small town in Washington, the
world looks a lot brighter thanks to the Qwest Pioneers. Brighter
purples, reds and blues is what you'll see in their drawings since the Pioneers
won a Make A Difference Day Award for their volunteer effort to purchase and supply
students in the Port Angeles and Sequim School Districts with something as
simple as a box of crayons.
In addition to collecting and donating the more standard school supplies as a
part of their volunteer efforts, the Pioneers in Port Angeles, Washington,
decided to concentrate on collecting crayons for their local elementary school
children. That was enough to catch the attention of the staff of the USA
Weekend Make a Difference Day Award Contest.
Pioneers in Colorado recently received a national award from the magazine's
contest. Local awards were then given to volunteer efforts in each of the 50
states. The Qwest Pioneers of the Olympic View Club won one
of 12 awards for projects in Washington.
Happy to hear of the award, Port Angeles District 121 Superintendent George R.
Woodruff says his schools appreciate the Pioneers' thoughtfulness. "Their
interest in our students, who may be in need, is certainly heartwarming in this
day of such lack of concern for others."
Project Coordinator Gwen Porterfield says everyone enjoys helping the schools
and they plan to do it again for the coming school year. "We really like
helping children at this age because many of us have grand children and
we know how much they like to color," she says.
The Qwest Pioneers have similar project that help local
schools in many areas in each of the 14 states. If you'd like to find
out about how you can get involved in a project planned for this school
year, contact your local Pioneer Chapter.
