Since 1992, the Qwest Pioneers in South Dakota have focused
on making Badlands National Park more accessible to physically challenged
visitors. They have contributed more than 2,700 volunteer hours on three
large-scale projects in the park: a 1,538-foot, wheelchair-accessible
boardwalk for the Fossil Exhibit Trail; a 1,020-foot boardwalk and staircase
around the park's steep Cliff Shelf Overlook; and a 500-foot walkway that
will enable physically challenged visitors to hear the prairie grass "sing,"
a favorite attraction at the park.
National Parks Superintendent William Supernaugh awarded the Qwest
Pioneers of South Dakota the 1999 National Park Partnership Award for
Recreational Projects. Pioneer Gordon Paulson and Partner Diane Paulson
accepted the award on April 21 in Washington DC at the White House Visitor
Center during National Park Week, April 19-26.
Although this award recognizes outstanding volunteer work and the people
behind it, the Qwest Pioneers take pride in making a difference
in their community regardless of recognition. When asked, most Pioneers will say the
reward is the feeling you get from helping people and our community. For more
information about Pioneering, call your local Pioneer Chapter.
