Pioneers put an interactive spin on map projects

Number of Qwest Pioneers in Idaho:

IDAHO'S TOTAL MEMBERSHIP: 1,533

ACTIVE EMPLOYEES: 422

RETIRED LIFE MEMBERS: 1091

1998-99 VOLUNTEER HOURS DONATED FOR COMMUNITY PROJECTS: 24,580

After receiving a tremendous amount of positive feedback from elementary schools on the Pioneers' signature giant playground map projects, Qwest Pioneers in Idaho decided to take an interactive approach to the same successful formula. By designing and building smaller, electronic versions of the maps, Idaho Pioneers discovered another way to make learning geography fun.

"Both our Pioneers and our schools have really taken to our electronic versions of the maps as an alternative to the big outdoor ones," says former Idaho State Leader Pat Eddins. "We're glad that we were able to find an educational project that in one form or the other appeals to the individual needs of our members as well as the schools in our communities."

The way it works: a map on a board is wired to light up when a student matches the correct capital with its state. Idaho Pioneers have shared directions so that more than 200 maps have been built and donated to fifth grade classes all over Idaho. In addition, they have shared their directions with Pioneer chapters in seven other states. Idaho has committed more funds in the coming year to continue this worthwhile project.
