Wyoming Special Highlights

A sample of our volunteer projects:

ELECTRONIC MAPS: This chapter project works on a smaller scale than the giant playground maps by using smaller electronic boards to teach students each state's capitol. It is a new project for Wyoming that has grown with enthusiasm after it got its start in Idaho. Six boards were completed this year and more are in progress to be presented to fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms as the school year begins.

THE BACK TO SCHOOL PROJECT: A group of Wyoming Pioneers joined together at the start of the school year to collect and distribute school supplies to less fortunate students whose families cannot afford the basic supplies for the classroom.

READ TO ME KITS: Wyoming Pioneers donate Read To Me Kits that include the starting essentials for a newborn along with a book entitled "Read To Me." These kits are given to new mothers at hospitals and the Wyoming Infant Care Program in Casper to encourage new mothers to read to their children from the beginning of their life.

READ WRITE NOW: A part of this program, "Play on Paper," is directed at the Head Start program in several areas of the state. Play on Paper introduces pre-kindergarten children to a number of reading readiness concepts. More than 50 volunteer hours were logged as Pioneers assembled and delivered approximately 100 Play on Paper books. The effort is designed to help fight the "summer reading drop off."

HOT TIP BOOKS: Thirty-five schools throughout the state received 1,385 of these little booklets that encourage the parents of kindergartner's to read to their children. More than 200 volunteer hours were logged during this project.

OLYMPIC MERCHANDISING: U S WEST (now Qwest) is a major sponsor of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Cheyenne was the only city chosen to help U S WEST (now Qwest) with the region-wide merchandising of Olympic/U S WEST (now Qwest) products. Pioneers and their Partners volunteered more than 75 hours to help with this joint project with the company.

WYVOAD (Wyoming Volunteer Organization Active in Disaster):The Pioneer organization is in charge of the emergency communications for this statewide project. People from different communities are organized within WYVOAD to report any disaster that occurs. The Pioneers' role is to assist in determining the scale of the particular disaster and the kind and amount of help that will be needed to help the affected areas and its victims.

OTHER EFFORTS INCLUDE: Pioneers sponsor and volunteer in Wyoming's MS 150 Bike Tour to benefit multiple sclerosis. Pioneer volunteered many hours helping with registration, lunch, rest stops, sag wagons and the finish line. Pioneers also support the fight against MS by volunteering at the Black Tie Walk. For the past three years, they worked on Muddy Mountain near Casper along side volunteers from the MS Society and BLM to build a trail for the disabled. For 13 years in Douglas, Wyoming, the Helluva Hunt is held in the fall to offer disabled hunters a chance to once again enjoy the sport. Pioneers serve as guides and serve lunch to all who participate.
