Colorado Pioneers win national award

Number of Qwest Pioneers in Colorado:

COLORADO'S TOTAL MEMBERSHIP: 9,015

ACTIVE EMPLOYEES: 3,446

RETIRED LIFE MEMBERS: 5,569

1998-99 VOLUNTEER HOURS DONATED FOR COMMUNITY PROJECTS: 3,054

When you do good work purely for the good of your community, someone is bound to notice. Recently, the volunteer work of Qwest Pioneers in Colorado won national recognition from the USA WEEKEND magazine's 8th Annual Make A Difference Day

On April 20, the Pioneer project at Fort Logan Elementary in Sheridan, a suburb of Denver, was recognized as one of ten volunteer projects by the USA WEEKEND magazine's 8th Annual Make A Difference Day Awards. Country singer Reba McEntire was the keynote speaker at the awards. Pioneer Project Coordinator Don Kastle accepted the award.

For their project, Colorado Pioneers will receive a $10,000 grant from Paul Newman, who donates all after-tax profits from his food company, Newman's Own, to educational and charitable projects. "Every day of a life matters, but Make a Difference Day is special, indeed. People all over the nation and the globe set aside that day to help someone else, " says Newman. "It's a powerful day. I'm glad to be a part of it."

Fort Logan Elementary is a school with limited funding and many needs. On Make a Difference Day, more than 60 Pioneers completed quite a bit to make a difference at this school. They painted playground equipment and repaired swings where dangerous metal was exposed; donated schools supplies, new books for the library and a digital sign for broadcast messages to students and parents; painted one of their signature playground maps to make learning about geography fun; distributed the proceeds from a clothing drive to students who were in need; and built a ?Pioneer Post Office and Store? that students can use to practice spelling and grammar in the letters they write and as well as their math skills in other educational games.

Although this awards recognizes outstanding volunteer work and the people behind it, the Qwest Pioneers take pride in making a difference in their community regardless of recognition. When asked, most Pioneers will say the reward is the feeling you get from helping people and our community.

Remember this is just one example of Pioneering that got noticed. The U S WEST Pioneers have many other projects in your community. Please contact the local Pioneer leader in your state for more information.
