The Red Cross currently has disaster relief operations in Glenwood Springs (Coal Seam
Fire), Canon City (Iron Mountain), Denver's Front Range (Hayman Fire), in Durango (Missionary Ridge and Valley Fires) and in Monte Vista (Million Fire). The Red Cross response to the Colorado wildfires will be costly-current estimations are between $700,000 and $1,000,000. With these leadership gifts and pledges, several events that are planned over the next few weeks, and special customer donation campaigns that have been launched, the Red Cross expects to be able to meet the costs of responding to the Colorado wildfires. With the support of these generous organizations and the generosity of the people of Colorado, the American Red Cross will be able to continue to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need. As damage assessment continues, the estimated cost of the disaster operation could increase.
As the American Red Cross continues to respond to wildfires across the state, the Red Cross has opened several service centers for the victims of the current Colorado wildfires. At these service centers, Red Cross trained disaster relief workers consisting of disaster nurses, mental health workers, and interviewers visit with anyone affected by the wildfires. Interviewers may assist by providing disaster victims with the means to pay for what they need most - groceries, new clothing, rent, household items and medicines. Red Cross nurses assess sanitary conditions, assist with disaster related minor injuries and illnesses, and may help victims replace eyeglasses, dentures, hearing aids, and/or prescriptions lost in the disaster. Red Cross mental health workers who are licensed mental health professionals provide emotional support. This assistance, as with all Red Cross services, is confidential and given on a uniform basis, based on family size and need. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by the generosity of our community leaders and contributions from thousands of individuals in Colorado.
