THE QWEST FOUNDATION HELPS FUND AND SUPPORT THE FUTURE
CITY COMPETITION IN PHOENIX ARIZONA
WHO
Seventh- and eighth-graders at Canyon Breeze Elementary School will be
working on their entries for the Phoenix Region Future City Competition.
The Phoenix Region Future City competition is sponsored in part by a $2,500
grant
from the Qwest Foundation, Qwest Communications’ philanthropic program. WHAT
The Future City Competition is a national program sponsored by the engineering
community to promote technological literacy and engineering to middle-school
students. Approximately 280 teams, representing 40 schools, will compete
in the Phoenix Region Future City Competition, which fosters an interest in
math,
science, and engineering through hands-on, real-world applications. Students
work under the guidance of a teacher and practicing engineer to construct
a scale model, computer model or write an essay about their section of a sustainable
city of the future and create an oral presentation for the judges.
Canyon Breeze Elementary School has 20 teams preparing for the Phoenix-region
competition in January. Canyon Breeze teachers weave the program outcomes,
which are aligned with Arizona’s state education standards, into the
science, math, social studies and language arts curriculum.
