QWEST FOUNDATION GRANT TO SUPPORT NORTHERN
NEW MEXICO TEACHER TRAINING

GRANT DETAILS

  • $7,500 grant from the Qwest Foundation, Qwest Communications’ philanthropic program, given to the Northern New Mexico Council on Excellence in Education (NNMCEE) to support its Math and Science Academy (MSA).
  • The grant will help provide stipends and materials for teachers and teleconferencing for teachers in outlying areas in Northern New Mexico during the 2004-2005 school year.
  • This is the third Qwest Foundation grant to the MSA since 2002, for a grant total of $22,500.

ABOUT THE MATH AND SCIENCE ACADEMY (MSA)

  • Created in 2000, the MSA is a research-based program that helps K-9 teachers implement standards-based education, integrate technology into their classrooms, and address teaching and learning challenges. The MSA program has positively impacted test scores in participating schools.
  • 12 teachers from three school districts participated in the first MSA program. For the 2004-2005 school year, 72 teachers from 14 schools in the Chama, Mora, Espanola, Taos, and Pojoaque districts will participate in the program.
  • Participants commit 186 hours above and beyond their regular teaching duties to MSA each year. The hours include three weeks of intensive training during the summer, four to five coaching sessions, and biweekly meetings and online discussions. The teachers commit to stay in the MSA program for three years.
  • Teacher experience ranges from no classroom experience up to 30 years.
  • The MSA is a partnership between the NNMCEE and Los Alamos National Laboratories.
